What is PT-141 (Bremelanotide)?

PT-141, also known as Bremelanotide, is a synthetic peptide and an analogue of the α-MSH hormone (α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone). It is being studied in scientific research, particularly for its ability to activate melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system.

The action of PT-141 is primarily linked to the MC3R and MC4R receptors, which play a central role in the regulation of sexual motivation and libido. Initially developed as a derivative of Melanotan II, clinical research has revealed that it has specific effects on sexual function without influencing skin pigmentation.

Potential Benefits

PT-141 can increase sexual desire in men and women by activating melanocortin receptors in the central nervous system. Studies show improved erection and better sexual response in men suffering from erectile dysfunction. Unlike PDE-5 inhibitors, PT-141 acts centrally in the brain and not through a direct influence on blood flow, which makes it potentially effective even for sexual dysfunctions of psychological origin. The effect can manifest 30 to 60 minutes after application. PT-141 is also being studied in the context of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), particularly in post-menopausal women.
